Hall of Fame History

HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL RACQUETBALL HALL OF FAME

  • 1973 – The Hall of Fame was called “Helms Hall of Fame”.
  • 1974 - Helms Hall of Fame changed to “Citzens Hall of Fame”.
  • 1978 – Hall of Fame criteria changed – Must be retired from serious competition for five years.
  • 1978 – Citizens Hall of Fame changed to “IRA Hall of Fame”.
  • 1979 – IRA Hall of Fame changed to “AARA Hall of Fame”.
  • 1988 – Hall of Fame inductees voted on by Board of Directors only.
  • 1990 – Hall of Fame voting committee revised to 30 at large people.
  • 1991 – Vote to maintain Hall of Fame for amateurs only.
  • 1991 – Hall of Fame committee expanded to 100 voting members.
  • 1993 – Hall of Fame qualification changes to include gold points.
  • 1995 – Hall of Fame qualification changes – 2 categories: athlete and distinguished service.
  • 1996 – Hall of Fame expanded to include professionals.
  • 1997 – AARA Hall of Fame changed to “USRA Hall of Fame”.
  • 2003 –  a.  Hall of Fame voting group reduced to 23 voters.

                     b.   Hall of Fame age limit changed to 40 years old.

  • 2004 – USRA Hall of Fame changed to “USAR Hall of Fame.
  • 2004 –  a.   Hall of Fame new rule – a professional must be retired for at least 3 years.

                      b.       Hall of Fame new rule – all 23 voters must make conference call.

  • 2005 – Hall of Fame “Other Policies and Procedures put on web.
  • 2007 – Guidelines for a Professional Hall of Fame nomination.
